Fortuna

fortune (n.)

c. 1300, "chance, luck as a force in human affairs," from Old French fortune "lot, good fortune, misfortune" (12c.), from Latin fortuna "chance, fate, good luck," from fors (genitive fortis) "chance, luck," possibly ultimately from PIE root *bher- (1) "to carry," also "to bear children," which is supported by de Vaan even though "The semantic shift from 'load' or 'the carrying' to 'chance, luck' is not obvious ...." The sense might be "that which is brought."

Sense of "owned wealth" is first found in Spenser; probably it evolved from senses of "one's condition or standing in life," hence "position as determined by wealth," then "wealth, large estate" itself.

To react with "unfortunate" with the presentation of a bad circumstance...

Would you have avoided or improved the circumstance if you were more lucky or had more riches

To be lucky, is to have fortune, is to have luck.

To be lucky is to be able to repair any circumstance of bad luck with expenditure. To be unlucky is to gather debt as circumstance falls into compounding disrepair.

To be incomparably rich, one must have a great deal of luck in birth right.

There is no luck without riches.

Neither meritorious.

For the two to be so inexorably tied as to share a word undifferentiated is substantial, for when one is applied, so should the other. To share a word is to share room in one's heart and mind.

Perhaps we deny use of the word "fortune" due to its problematic definition?

How do I know someone described as "unfortunate" is in a spell of poor meritorious wager or whose parents were simply poor?

What is the baseline condition for humanity? You, or your parents, or your descendants will find it, or have found it. What is the floor? Can you build fortune from nothing? No - how can you be lucky without a coin to flip?

How do you design a second chance?
How do you draw blood from a stone?
How do you catch the fallen?
Say you lose everything, how low do you deserve to go?
